For anybody travelling to Rome
When England played in France a few days ago,
the Football Supporters’ Federation provided a
"Fans Embassy" as it does for all England away matches.
These are easily identifiable locations that people know to head for in case of major or minor problems.
The FSF embassies are funded by the FA, Home Office and commercial sponsors.
These are a great idea and for more than a year now IMUSA has been recommending to the Club that they work with us to provide these sorts of embassies for our fans when we’re playing away in Europe.
This hasn’t happened, so the best we can do is pass on all the information and advice we have collected from United fans living in Rome, the British Embassy and our previous experiences of playing there over the past year or so.
Places to Avoid
Stay away from
CAMPO DE FIORI which could be the meeting point for the AS Roma fans and a place where there has been a lot of trouble in the past amongst football fans (This is a bad area for violence anyway). Piazza di Popolo should be also avoided.
It is strongly advised that fans use the free public transport provided by the authorities from the Villa Borghese to get to the stadium and not to travel to the stadium on foot or by other means (taxi or other public transport).
If this can't be avoided, one number puts you in touch with all the taxi firms in Rome - 060609 - Travel only in officially licensed taxis with the taxi sign on the roof and watch where they drop you off.
You are urged NOT to take the metro trains to the Piazza Flaminio or attempt to use the Ponte DUCA D'AOSTA bridge as these are habitual routes taken by the 'Ultras' to the stadium
This doesn’t mean that other areas are safe, just that these are the most dangerous areas
Security and Police
We're told that there will be an outer ticket cordon at which full searches will take place. Perfume, make-up bags and bags of coins are prohibited and will be confiscated and will not be returned later.
It is customary in all areas of the stadium for spot checks to be carried out and proof of identity sought.
Acceptable proof of identity documents are a passport or a photo driving licence – photocopies are not acceptable.
Fans should be aware that there has recently been trouble between Italian fans and the police following the tragic shooting of a young Lazio fan. Rioting occurred across the country and near to the Olympic Stadium.
Games were cancelled and the Italian authorities have vowed to take a tough stance on football violence. Some of those arrested in Rome were charged a couple of weeks ago with 'terrorism'.
Take good note that the
Roma4 are still in prison and that they were arrested, detained, tried and sentenced all within the space of 9 days.
One local has told us “People have to realise that the policing here is a little different and that a sharp pain in the thigh or bum could well be a sly stabbing [by an Ultra]!!”.
We had a good demonstration of that when we played there last April and again in December.
The advice is to treat the Roma police and Ultras with equal caution.
In case of emergency
The British Consul is open to the public from 9.15am to 1.30pm daily and manned until 5pm. The switchboard telephone number is (0039) 06 42200001 or for lost/stolen passports 06 4220 2420.
For out of hours assistance there is a Consular Duty Officer for urgent and real emergencies who can be contacted by telephoning (0039) 06 4220 2603.
This number is manned by a security officer at the British Embassy who will then contact the Consular Duty Officer. The caller should have a contact telephone number on which the duty officer can call them back.
On the evening of the match there will be duty officers on call in the Consular Section and they can be contacted on (0039) 06 4220 2420 until the supporters have left the stadium.
This number is only for urgent emergencies and/or lost/stolen passports.
Further travel advice to Italy can be obtained on the Foreign Office website at www.fco.gov.uk under “Travel Advice by Country”.
Finally, Italian law apparently prohibits the issue of duplicate tickets therefore, lost tickets CANNOT be replaced.
In case of arrest
Fans are advised not to sign or agree to anything until they understand what is being asked of them, whether this is because the information needs translating or because it needs specialist advice from a lawyer.
Fans should also appoint their own lawyer as soon as possible.
A lot of the
Roma4’s problems were caused by the poor advice given to them by the state appointed lawyer that initially took charge of their case.
Michele Vaira is an English speaking lawyer who can help in case of arrest and has worked with United fans before. Mobile: +39 328 9729972 Office: +39 06 916506637
