A FOOTBALL fan found himself in trouble with the German authorities for flying the flag for the Island during the World Cup.
David Cowley spent two weeks in Germany watching the tournament with seven friends.
But when one of the group hung the Manx flag up at a stadium ahead of a match, they attracted some unwanted attention.
David, 23, explained: 'The stewards were going past and were on their radios looking at the flag and getting quite flustered.'
The fireman from Douglas told the stewards the flag belonged to him and his friends.
Despite agreeing to take it down, he was handcuffed and taken away for questioning and the flag was
confiscated. David thinks the Germans mistook the Three Legs for a Swastika and showed them his Manx driving licence in a bid to clear the matter up.
'Now I look back at it, it's quite funny,' he said. 'But it was scary at the time because no matter how much I tried to explain it was our national flag there was a steward with a bit of authority who wouldn't listen.' The issue was resolved with the help of a German policeman who could speak English, although the flag was not returned.

ENGLAND FANS arriving in Gelsenkirchen where the team will play Portugal in the World Cup quarter final on Saturday - casting doubt over whether the city centre will be big enough for the huge numbers
expected.
The Ruhr Valley city has a population of more than 250,000 but the central area around the station, with its narrow streets and compact squares, has a small-town feel to it.
A 42-year-old builder and Stoke City fan who said he was always known by his nickname of Harvey, said: "I arrived here on Monday and was staying here, but I've moved out to the town of Bochum.
"I don't think this place is big enough for all the people who will turn up here - the England games have had huge followings."
Student Jamie Fisher, 21, from Bridgwater, Somerset, said: "The place will be overrun but its economy will benefit unbelievably."

Chissa' se funzionerebbe anche con noi quando usciamo dai pubs...
Lollipops are to be used by Enfield police in a bid to calm down rowdy drinkers during the World Cup.
In an inventive move, the sweets will be handed out to drinkers as they emerge from various pubs and clubs in the borough in the hope that they will have a soothing effect on the more aggressive members of the public.
Police are hoping the World Cup will pass trouble free in Enfield.
Det Insp Andy Maddocks, of the violent crime unit, said: "In the lead up to the World Cup we have been liaising with licensees to see what we can do to reduce late night rowdiness.
"This idea has been tried out in other parts of the country and they have reported a reduction in the fights and general noise as people make their way home."

ERIC CANTONA has backed Wayne Rooney to become the best player in the world —- if he snubs the birds and the booze!
Manchester United star Rooney, 20, has overcome his broken metatarsal and is now a key figure in England’s World Cup bid in Germany.
Old Trafford legend Cantona told United magazine: “Rooney is still young and you cannot expect everything from a man who is 20 compared to a player who is 25 or 26.
“Nevertheless, he has the qualities to become one of the best — and maybe even the best — player in the world.
“But to be one of the best you have to take the game seriously, very seriously. You have to eat sensibly, drink sensibly — I mean water! — train hard and go to bed early. These things are very important.
“Many young players are in the spotlight. All the girls like you and you are invited everywhere. You need to be strong enough to deal with that.
“You have to make sacrifices because talent is only a small percentage. A bit of luck is important but after that it’s about mental strength.”
